Consisting of an exhibition space, storeroom, vault and two offices, the new Mucciaccia Gallery extends over two completely renovated floors in a historic building located in the historic Campo Marzio neighbourhood in the heart of Rome. Just a short walk from Via Condotti and Piazza di Spagna, this new gallery is the ideal meeting place for artists, collectors, experts and art lovers. „I spent seven years in Piazza d’Ara Coeli, which is a wonderful location but lacks visibility,“ said the energetic young gallery owner Massimiliano Mucciaccia. „Now I have chosen a place at the heart of Rome’s famous strolling district, the ‘passeggiata romana‘, seeking to create an attractive, functional and appealing space where anyone walking by would feel welcome to come in and have a look around.“
With its ten large windows and 400 square metre exhibition area, this splendidly hospitable white space was opened about a year ago when it hosted an exhibition of work by Georges Mathieu, the founder of the Abstraction Lyrique movement. It functions as an outstanding art showcase in coordination with Mucciaccia’s other galleries in Cortina d’Ampezzo and Singapore. „The gallery in Cortina d’Ampezzo serves as a showcase, the one in Singapore as a promotional centre. They are both tough ventures, but they repay our efforts and generate a great deal of enthusiasm.“
The Gallery has a twofold mission: to promote the masters of contemporary art (including such famous names as Agostino Bonalumi, Alighiero Boetti, Alberto Burri, Afro, Enrico Castellani, Lucio Fontana, Achille Perilli, Robert Rauschenberg, Mimmo Rotella, Jacques Villeglé and George Mathieu, to mention just a few) and to give visibility to young contemporary artists who are emerging onto the global marketplace.
The Rome-based practice Riviello Architetti Associati skilfully carried through the project to create a brightly lit space in which art can live and breathe, a place that can successfully display works dating from various periods and based on different ideas and materials. „The rigorous surfaces of Bonalumi and Castellani’s everted canvases must be able to coexist with Burri’s sacks, Boetti’s tapestries, de Chirico’s squares and Boccioni’s dots of paint,“ explained the architects. „Not to mention Maurizio Savini’s chewing gum sculptures, Claudio Capotondi’s statuesque marble sculptures and Cristiano Pintaldi’s pixel paintings… For this reason, it was vital for the lighting and the choice of materials and colours in the rooms not be intrusive. And as the gallery is open to the public the whole day long, the floor had to have a very high level of foot traffic resistance. The chosen ceramic tile, the Oliva body-colour porcelain tile in a 60×60 cm size from the Blend series by Fioranese, covers the floor seamlessly in a sophisticated shade of cement-look grey and delivers both the necessary mechanical strength and the required elegance. It has made an invaluable contribution to the creation of a space that was immediately a big success with the public.“
