The Hotel Kole and restaurant in Čačak, in the heart of Serbia, has been given a radical makeover. The team of architects from Belgrade-based practice Primavera Studio was commissioned to redesign both the exterior and the interior spaces of the structure, both of which stand out for their distinctive irregular grid pattern of metal profiles.
„The reconstruction and refurbishment project was completed in 2021,“ says architect Du?an Tojaga. „The clients needed to free up as much interior space as possible and to create a contemporary restaurant based on our design approach. They also wanted to reorganise this space and connect it with the lounge and to remodel the outdoor terrace. The grid element was chosen as the basis of the new concept and was used for the parapets and the façade and to enclose one side of the terrace. The supporting element on the opposite side consists of three intertwined pilasters. The grid pattern, which symbolises a renewed connection between people, also appears in the decoration of the interior spaces on the walls and on the ceiling itself, where the opaque black industrial style is used as a backdrop for golden elements.“
Wood and exposed brickwork were chosen as natural, warm materials, complemented by the ceramic tiles from La Fabbrica used on most of the surfaces.
The Pierres des Chateaux Advance collection was chosen for the floors thanks to its innovative technology that guarantees 24-hour hygiene and healthier environments. This technology helps to eliminate harmful microorganisms and reduces environmental pollution due to the presence of 40% recycled materials.
„Smaller tiles with a more domestic feel were used for the bars and the side walls in the dining area,“ continues Tojaga. These tiles are from the SPACE series, an eclectic mixture of orange 20×20 cm cement tiles with geometric patterns that are also used on the bathroom floor but in a darker shade.
„In the restaurant’s lounge area, larger size tiles from the Scratch series (designed for the AVA brand by architects Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas) were installed in place of the initially specified wall paintings.
The overall mix of materials, the contrast between warm colours and the elegance of black and the industrial mood together create an atmosphere that is well suited to a high-class kitchen but with a relaxed approach instead of rigid formality.
