A timeless place in the countryside ideal for escaping from the stresses of daily life, the Huize Hölterhof Sauna Wellness Hotel & Restaurant is located on the edge of the Aamsveen nature reserve on the outskirts of Enschede, a Dutch city in the heart of the Twente region and bordering with the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. A country home first built in 1913 as the summer residence of textile entrepreneur Gijs Jannink, it eventually became a resort where guests could relax and relive the rural atmospheres of the early twentieth century.
With its steeply sloping slate roof and chimneys, Huize Hölterhof blends into the landscape and maintains the look of a traditional cottage. The interiors are bright — thanks to large windows that open onto the garden and the woods — and furnished in a modern style with extensive use of materials such as concrete and wood. The seventeen well-appointed rooms have an essential style tempered by skilful use of warm wood tones.
The practice Beltman Architecten Enschede, which oversaw the resort renovation project, chose the LivingStones porcelain tile collection from Blustyle by Cotto d’Este in a Blue Origin finish and 60×60 cm size for the entrance, the area subject to highest foot-traffic wear.
For the verandas, stairs and connecting areas, the architects opted for an elegant Nordic look created by the natural colour and textures of Pierre Bleue limestone and grey basalt, magmatic stone with the intense tones of cooling lava. Huize Hölterhof is set in extensive grounds and features a restaurant, an outdoor swimming pool and a wellness centre.
