The Cashmere home renovation project is an exemplary model of architecture integrated with nature. Here in Brisbane, Australia, outdoor life is just as important as the interior domestic spaces. For this project, architect Dion Seminara from Brisbane-based practice DS Architecture put his local experience to good use in integrating the construction characteristics of the area with the irrepressible vitality of nature.
In this residence, set amongst the lush greenery, the indoor and outdoor living spaces are integrated seamlessly, the adjacent areas interconnected by a sequence of smooth lines and open spaces. The windows look out onto the peace and calm of an exotic, welcoming garden. The overall project stands out for its sense of harmony and the continuous references between interior and exterior. It also makes skilful use of different heights. In particular, the outdoor living and dining areas adjacent to the house remain below the level of the garden so they are naturally sheltered, while the large kidney-shaped swimming pool dominates the garden. Right next to it, an open summerhouse provides additional outdoor living space.
The continuity between the interiors and exteriors is further enhanced by the extensive use of the same floor covering material, NAT Nebraska 60×60 mm collection floor tiles from Del Conca alternating with natural stone and wood. The same finish is used for the swimming pool floor.
«The project aimed to improve the external landscape by redesigning the garden, remodelling the existing pool and creating a structure for relaxation at the edge of the pool,» explained architect Dion Seminara. «There’s also a new outdoor living area connected directly to the existing interior space. Large doors and windows emphasise this connection. As architects, we devote the necessary time and personal attention to truly understand the lifestyle needs, desires and expectations of each individual client. We have the talent and experience needed to carry through customised remodelling and extension projects or to build an entirely new home. This involves not just architecture but also interior design, landscape design and complete project management. In this project we aimed to add a tropical touch.» The Brisbane-based practice DS Architecture consists of architects specialising in residential renovation and new build projects. Architect Dion Seminara recently won a number of awards including the prestigious ArCHdes Residential Architecture Awards for four projects and the AIA Commendation for public architecture projects in June 2016 for the remodelling and renovation of St Peter and Paul’s Church in Bulimba.
