Edelweiss Hotel

ATLAS CONCORDE
2010
Opened in May 2010 in the centre of Berchtesgaden, a German town near the border with Austria, Edelweiss Hotel is a superior four star complex set in a magnificent Alpine area dominated by Mount Watzmann and the Königssee. With its diversified array of tourist facilities, it brings together sports, nature, entertainment and culture in a mountain landscape just 30 km from the city of Salzburg.
Located in the heart of Berchtesgaden in front of the Congress Centre, the hotel stands on a grey plinth with a sequence of arched windows that connect the common areas and the lobby with the exterior spaces. The three upper floors house the guest rooms, while a set-back glass volume and roof terrace on the top level offer a panoramic view over the surrounding Alps and feature relaxation areas, restaurant and wellness spaces. This level, which overlooks the city and the Alpine landscape, also has a covered swimming pool surrounded by internal and external relaxation areas and a bistro. The spa covers two floors of the hotel, while the third floor also hosts a variety of saunas (Alpine, Finnish, etc. with different temperatures and degrees of humidity), a beauty farm offering massages, treatments and solarium, and a fitness area with modern equipment, brightly lit halls and a room for Pilates sessions.
In this exclusive location, the architects and clients have opted for sophisticated furnishing elements and high-quality materials, often in a combination of styles that reflect the end use of the spaces. Several different tile collections from Ceramiche Atlas Concorde were chosen for the floor and wall coverings. The spa, lobby and common areas feature Plan Outdoor Black mosaics and Trust collection tiles in two colours (Ivory and Gold) and three different sizes, creating different patterns according to the location and use of the spaces. The colours and textures adapt well to the natural coloured wood and clear glass used for the partitions, which were selected to create a sense of either closure and intimacy or openness and interrelation with the outside world.
The reception consists of an elegant, sumptuous lobby in a neoclassical style, dominated by coloured wallpaper and furnishings. In the wellness area reception the pale coloured background features bright fabrics and decorative wood inserts. In the covered swimming pool, the space appears to extend outwards through large windows, while beams and points of light bounce back and forth between the false ceiling and the floor. The relaxation areas and the saunas feature a conspicuous presence of wood, used as slats and strips, on the ceilings, for the beams and as furnishings in a spatial concept that references the Alpine tradition and embodies the essence of woods and mountains.
