With facilities catering for both business guests and holidaymakers, the Marriott group operates in 131 different countries worldwide and has now brought its luxury AC Hotel brand to the historic centre of Spartanburg in South Carolina.
The interiors were designed by DLR Group, a large American design firm whose promise is to « elevate human experience through design » with innovative and integrated solutions focused on environmental sustainability. For this AC Hotel by Marriot, the first to be built in the United States, the designers looked for inspiration to Europe where the AC Hotels first originated and developed. The hotel project features an interesting blend of classic architecture and spaces with a contemporary spirit, all combined with the utmost attention to detail. With its 11 floors and 114 rooms, the hotel stands as a new urban landmark in downtown Spartanburg. A rooftop bar and restaurant offer guests breathtaking views of the city.
Built from more than 200,000 bricks, the hotel has a postmodern façade surmounted by a tiled barrel roof, while the facing brick veneer contrasts with the marble base, cornices and stone quoins. This style with its wealth of classical references continues inside, where crown mouldings, raised panels and other traditional architectural details are combined with modern fixtures, minimalist furnishings and works of art. The hotel rooms themselves are designed with western sensibility and a European spirit, sporting neutral colours, elegant furnishings, natural lighting and a preference for large spaces.
A key aspect of the interior design project coordinated by DLR Group is a collection of artwork from the Black Mountain Movement, which took place at the Black Mountain College in North Carolina between 1933 and 1957. This avant-garde movement used a wide variety of media. Although it only lasted a brief period of time, many of the teachers became artists who went on to create art that can be seen in many museums worldwide. The collection displayed in the AC Hotel Spartanburg is museum-quality artwork and is closely connected to the local region.
The ground floor, consisting of the entrance, reception, lobby, breakfast room, lounge bar and billiards room features a seamless marble-effect porcelain floor that creates a highly elegant and visually striking effect. The Marvel PRO collection produced by Atlas Concorde stands out for its intense, meticulously designed graphics offering an astonishingly realistic reproduction of marble. The Marvel Pro series was chosen in the elegant Grey Fleury colour and a rectangular 75×150 cm size, which adapts well to the wall mouldings, the internal pilasters, the white colour chosen for the walls and the minimalist, contemporary furnishing elements. The ceramic surfaces stand out for their intense veins, natural gradations and radiant aesthetics and reproduce the details of the original stone with astonishing precision. The expressive power of the marble effect is coupled with the technical advantages of porcelain, including perfect reproducibility over time and excellent resistance to wear, staining and cleaning products.
