9 Brick Hotel, located in the northern area of South Korea’s capital Seoul just a few kilometres from the historic Gyeongbokgung Palace, stands out for its vibrant mixture of classic elements and metropolitan style design.
The hotel’s structure is a harmonious fusion of past and present where vintage-look bricks represent the conceptual and material leitmotif of the building and the communal areas. Porcelain stoneware is used throughout. The architecture of the building and its interiors stands out for its sobriety, a rigorous style in which structure, form, space and materials reflect a cosmopolitan taste that remains true to its origins.
Formerly known as the Terrace hotel, this boutique establishment was reopened recently following an extensive refurbishment and interior design project carried out by Singapore-based practice Supernormal.
Located in a lively university area (Hongik University), its design appeals to both art lovers and guests seeking a haven of peace and quiet away from the noise and bustle of the city.
Bricks, stone and wood merge in the foyer together with splashes of urban greenery that recall Korea’s architectural roots. The authentic atmosphere is made even warmer and more welcoming by wall and ceiling lighting with an early twentieth-century retro feel. Throughout the hotel, even the smallest details convey a sense of luxury. Porcelain floor tiles and white body wall tiles from Atlas Concorde were used to lend elegance and a contemporary style to the interiors of the 94 guest rooms and ensuite bathrooms. Cement, marble and natural stone effects were chosen for all the surfaces in the boutique hotel, selected in natural colours that blend in well with the exterior brick façades and the contemporary and designer furnishings.
The only exception is a turquoise-coloured tile inspired by brushed concrete and synthetic resins, Turquoise from the Dwell series. This white-body wall tile combines a metropolitan character with eye-catching colours to create boutique spaces complete with designer furnishing accessories.
The Marvel and Marvel Pro collections, also from Atlas Concorde, were chosen for the floors and walls to enhance the brightness and sense of space. These collections reproduce the colours and veins of marble and are ideal as a bright, total-look solution for small spaces like bathrooms or for creating dynamic optical-effect geometries in the guest rooms. To create a particularly warm, welcoming atmosphere in some of the rooms, the architects opted for the Brave natural stone look collection with its wealth of vein effects, colour variations and material inclusions. The collection consists of porcelain floor tiles and white body wall tiles whose essential style is inspired by the aesthetics of rare natural stones.
