Originally inaugurated in 1821 in what is now the Campo Marzio neighbourhood in central Rome, Palazzo Nainer was built on the site of a former Augustinian monastery as part of a new urban and architectural plan drawn up by the famous architect and goldsmith Giuseppe Valadier. An important historical residence located in Via del Babuino, today it also houses a hotel named after the original building.
Inaugurated late last year following the completion of a meticulous renovation project, Palazzo Nainer is a four-star boutique hotel that blends past and present, tradition and innovation. The project, led by the Thile architecture & interior design practice of Ilenia Boccaletti and Thalia Carano, succeeded in maintaining and enhancing the building’s historical characteristics while creating well-appointed rooms with a modern ambience. « This was exactly what the owners were looking for, » explain the architects. « They wanted an elegant ambience that would be appropriate for the hotel’s unique location in a historic building, while combining a clean, modern look with the warmth and comfort necessary to make guests feel at home. »
With 27 rooms spread out over five floors, including several suites with small balconies overlooking Via del Babuino, the hotel also features a ground-floor bar and two other spaces which according to the architects « are two of the real highlights of the hotel: the splendid winter garden created by transforming a small cloister, and the fifth-floor terrace which formerly housed a small bar corner but is now one of the most beautiful and lively terraces in Rome ».
According to Ilenia Boccaletti and Thalia Carano, it is an « elegant and sophisticated design hotel », where « the combination of materials makes a real difference ». One example of this successful choice of materials is the Aesthetica Hegel marble-effect dry-pressed porcelain tile collection from Ava Ceramiche, selected in a 160×320 cm lapped version for use on the bathroom walls and washbasins in the suites and for the coffee tables located in the various common areas and rooms. « We chose this collection to fulfil the client’s request for elegant and refined bathrooms with a natural marble look that is more onyx than « nuvolato ». The material also stands out for its highly realistic streaks and fits in perfectly with the overall style of the hotel. »
