The warm, sun-drenched hillside surrounding the small village of Scena near Merano in South Tyrol is renowned for its mild climate and stunning scenery. The village is dominated by the eponymous castle which has been inhabited by Tyrolean noble families since 1350, its massive, compact volume standing as a reminder that even in antiquity the area was known for its mild winter temperatures. Today Scena has become a popular tourist destination all year round, as evidenced by the wide range of available accommodation facilities. One of these is Hotel Hilburger, a four-star establishment owned by the Pfostil family who recently completed a renovation project in a distinctive contemporary style. Located in the centre of the village, the hotel offers a modern interpretation of the local building tradition, opting for tasteful new colours and materials and a harmonious balance between past and present. The aim of the renovation project was to create unique, high-quality spaces that are welcoming, comfortable and attractive while maintaining a perfect balance between architecture and nature. Wood, the dominant material of the local building tradition, has been used extensively to clad the north façade while the southern side of the volume is broken up by large balconies that extend along the entire length of the hotel. A panoramic terrace on the top floor serves as a large solarium for guests and offers splendid views over the valley. But it is the hotel’s ground-floor relaxation area that stands out in particular for its hospitality and comfort. A large glazed wall allows the landscape and living area to merge together in a powerful bond between interior and exterior. The choice of materials and lighting design create a highly appealing space surrounding the swimming pool. In particular, the natural stone-inspired porcelain tiles (the Brave collection from Atlas Concorde in colours Pearl, Grey, Earth and Coke) stand out for their bright, lively surface with a wealth of natural details and extend into the pool itself. Large ceiling lamps and micro spotlights further emphasise the beauty of the ceramic tiles.
The outdoor pool area is also paved with porcelain tiles, specifically the Etic PRO collection from Atlas Concorde with its warm, natural grain referencing the wood panelling of the balconies and façade. The result is a striking blend of material and colour, a successful combination of aesthetics and reliability thanks to the non-slip characteristics and durability of ceramic tile.
