Waterbeat Society in in central Milan is the first hydrospinning centre in Italy. Neither a gym nor a swimming pool but an original cross between both, it offers its customers the chance to enjoy an intense water-based workout followed by a relaxing session in the wellness centre and spa.
Waterbeat Society is „the ideal place to exercise surrounded by original design and a sophisticated, unique atmosphere. The structure is designed for pure comfort and features state-of-the-art technologies and equipment for an exclusive fitness and wellness experience“.
Designed by Milan-based practice Nomade, „it was intended to be an innovative space that would be very different from the customary world of fitness“, explain the architects. „It is a place where the words ‘cool‘, ‘friendly‘ and ‘pop‘ come to mind, a centre with an innovative character and a fresh, colourful Californian mood.“
The 250-square-metre centre extends over two floors. The ground floor houses the reception, a waiting area and three massage booths, two of which are enclosed in velvet cocoons.
The centre’s core business – the swimming pool for the 12 bikes – is located on the lower floor. The area also features a waiting room, the shoe-changing area and the women’s and men’s changing rooms.
The architects opted for the Interni tile collection from Ceramica Vogue to give definition to the spaces, choosing from the range of 38 colours and numerous sizes which can be coordinated thanks to the collection’s high degree of modularity.
„The colours were chosen a turquoise, light and dark blue palette, and the walls and ceilings reflect the fresh appeal of these shades,“ explain the architects. „The choice of materials fits in perfectly with the crossover spirit of the interior design project. The reception desk is clad with white tiles with coloured joints, a material that contrasts starkly with the velvet chosen to line the massage cocoons present in the mezzanine.“ The porcelain tiles, chosen in a 10×10 cm size, colour Ghiaccio and a satin finish, stand out for their exceptional strength and resistance as well as ease of cleaning.
There are plenty of details that make the Waterbeat Society spaces unique, such as the interesting graphic effect created by the contrasting coloured joints.
The wall behind the reception desk is covered with wallpaper displaying the logo and foliage chosen as hydrospinning centre’s symbols. „The unifying element is the staircase leading to the mezzanine, entirely clad with simple, clean white perforated metal sheets. An iconic glass lift leads to the lower floor.“ A long bright, white corridor leads to the changing rooms and the pool area, which can be viewed from the waiting room through a large window. The pool itself is reached by a staircase with an end wall covered with water-repellent wallpaper displaying the logo and foliage, while the alcoves housing the showers and equipment storage rooms are clad with the same tiles used in the reception. „The changing rooms stand out for their fresh accents,“ conclude the architects from Nomade. „They feature a play of two colours, aquamarine for the women and a darker shade of blue for the men, while the showers are clad with white tiles, in this case with a black joint.“ And as suggested by the Waterbeat Society’s slogan „be a hydrolover“, all that is left to do is get pedalling!
