Rome’s Cassia neighbourhood, located in the north-west of the city, is named after the consular road that runs through it and connects Rome and Florence. One of the largest and most populated neighbourhoods of Rome, it stands out for its splendid buildings, wide streets and large green spaces.
Here we visit a small (55 square metre) apartment that has been completely remodelled by the Rome-based architects Ad-hoc / La casa su misura, who reorganised the spaces to create a perfect nest for the young couple who live there: dining room with open kitchen, bathroom, bedroom with walk-in closet, utility room and laundry area set up in the small hallway. „The aim of our project was to remodel the spaces and create a house that despite its small size would be fully equipped with modern conveniences in keeping with the needs of the young clients,“ interior designer Azzurra Vampo and architect Fabio Lombardi told us.
The warm, neutral tones permeating all the spaces are perfectly balanced in terms of materials and furnishings so as to enhance the sense of space, while carefully avoiding all elements liable to obstruct or interrupt the overall fluidity and sense of harmony. Wood plays an important role, chosen both for the furnishing elements and as the aesthetic inspiration for the ceramic floor and wall tiles installed throughout the apartment. „Our clients wanted a material that would combine the warm, coloured notes of reclaimed wood with characteristics of strength and durability,“ the architects explained. „The Ad-hoc team opted for porcelain tile from the Legend Heritage collection by Ariana in the colour Havana because it offers a perfect combination of strength and aesthetics.“ These tiles stand out in particular for their grain, knots, contrasting materials and intense chiaroscuro effects that create irregular graphic patterns typical of a wood surface that has been profoundly transformed by the passing of time. The same material was used for both the bathroom floors and the walls in the WC, bidet and washbasin areas as well as on the shower walls. The wall behind the sanitary fixtures culminates in a channel of light which provides natural illumination and accentuates the textural qualities of the tiles. The furnishings are clean and classy, with a white cast that makes the spaces even brighter and cleaner. The choice of DSW chairs from Charles Eames is a nice detail, their design lending a pleasant contemporary classic touch to the overall design.
